New Sketchbook + Gestures

I got a new sketchbook! It is a Handbook Artist Journal and I am absolutely in love with it.  The pages are super high quality and they take my markers really nicely. I can see why people like them so much.
Here’s one of my first pages! These are people coming back from class or doing whatever.  It was challenging to draw them in such a short amount of time but I learned a great deal about proportion and gesture.  I think I am going to start doing these exercises more often.

Value Study

This was the second project for 2D Design! I wasn’t sure if I should upload this but what the heck.  All done in gouache!

Meeting Tom Bancroft

This weekend, I met the amazing Tom Bancroft! He animated on Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan, Mulan, The Lion King, Aladdin, Pocahontas, etc.. It was incredibly inspiring to meet him and I am so grateful for this opportunity.
I think I died when he signed my sketchbook. AND when he drew Mushu (he was supervising animator for him AHHHH).

Gesture

My figure drawing teacher really liked this gesture! It’s pretty wild haha.

FEWS Mid-Length Poses

Hands!

Lately, I have been doing many hand, feet, skull, and skeleton studies for figure drawing.  I got tired of doing the same thing over and over again so I tried experimenting! I love this page.

Sassy Model

So we have this club at Ringling called FEWS.  It is basically just a group of people who meet from Mon-Thurs for figure drawing(fun fun)!  Last thursday, we had this AMAZING model and I absolutely loved her.  She reminded me of dat old Hollywood glamour.  She had sass.

Meeting Steve Hickner - Director of "The Prince of Egypt" and "Bee Movie"

This weekend we got to see Steve Hickner! He’s the director for “The Prince of Egypt” and “Bee Movie.” He has also worked as storyboard artist on “Over the Hedge,” “Madagascar,” “Shark Tale,” “Shrek Forever After,” and “Antz.”
It was absolutely amazing meeting Steve.  He gave a presentation highlighting various things we will run into in our careers.  It was incredibly motivating.
Here are some quotes from the presentation!
“You’re not an artist without a sense of your tradition.”
“Missed chances don’t show up on life’s scorecard.”
“Don’t take someone else’s time until you put in your own.”
“Your early twenties are life’s beachfront property.”
“You can teach a person to have skill not an attitude.”
“James Cameron: “Saddle up to the people around you, not above you.””
“Be your own sculptor - reinvent yourself from others.”
“You see the famous CalArts picture with John, Pete, Musker, Selick, etc, and like there are only 10 of them yet 7 of them are major directors! Do you know why?! Because they hired each other!”
“The guy who does it is going to get there.  The person who says he is going to do it is going to fall behind.”
“Never turn down a combat mission.”
“The best opportunities don’t come in ribbons.  When opportunity comes you have to run to it.”
“No job is unimportant.” - I found this really interesting.  He is right.  No job is unimportant because you have no idea where that job will lead you.
“You are all at one point going to face rejection.”
He also has a book called “Animating Your Career”  I got a signed copy :D It is very interesting so far.  I recommend it to anyone in the creative field.
And here’s a picture with everyone and Steve (photo credits to Vicki)!

St. Armands & Labor Day Weekend

We went to St. Armands Circle this weekend! If you don't know what St. Armands is, it is basically a beautiful circle full of all sorts of shops! It was really exciting to be there!  We went to this art gallery where Tahoe exhibited his air bending powers ^.^.  The guy is such an adventurer. He has all these crazy interesting stories.  You wouldn't imagine what kinds of experiences he has had.

Oh! And I finally have a picture of myself.  If you spotted the Indian girl, THAT'S ME! And of course, there's Jessica on the left, Tahoe behind me, Allen on the right back, and Andrew on the right front.  You wouldn't believe how talented these kids are.

All in all, I am really enjoying my time here at Ringling! I will keep you guys posted on what's going on. ARTWORK TO COME SOON!!!

Caricatures @3AM

Today we drew caricatures of each other :)

The one on my door is drawn by Camilo (camilocastroart.tumblr.com)

And the one on the right is by Andrew (theartofandrewcapuano.blogspot.com)

They are both so talented and so wonderful! Check them out!

MOVE-IN DAY

I have finally arrived at Ringling! And I must say it is incredible! Today was move-in day so it was a very busy morning for all of us.

I picked up my keys and ID(I sent my picture in early) while upperclassmen helped me carry my luggage to my dorm. I live on the 2nd floor, which is supposedly the “fun” floor, with my roommate, Jessica(who is supertastic). My suite mates, Yeojin and Vicki were not there. We share the bathroom with them so I consider them roommates as well and was sad to not meet them.

After that, it was the setting up stuff. Man, I barely know where anything is since my mom insisted on helping. It was very sweet of her but gah like where is my hair dryer..

I missed lunch because of setting up, though! The eating schedule is SO early here. I mean I feel fine since I eat pretty early but for some people who eat late, dinner from 5:30-7:00 is crazy! So anyways, I ended up going with my parents to McDonalds and then getting last minute shopping stuff. After that, I was back at the dorm with Jessica.

But I have to say the dorm is REALLY nice. It’s gigantic for a college dorm and very nicely designed. It’s probably the nicest college dorm I have seen. The hallways and common room are sweet as well.

We went for dinner at Hammonds which was actually my first time eating at Ringling. They have everything there and it’s buffet style. It was not that bad! I liked it. Many people said it was okay but hey it was way better than the crap I had at SAIC precollege. So I had grilled veggies(meh), pasta salad(yum), and this veggie soft flat bread sandwich with cream cheese, cranberries, leaves of some kind, and nuts (good). They also had one of those cool drink machines which have like everything in it and it’s all touch screen and high-tech. I only had water, though, since I try to stay away from sugary drinks. All in all, I thought it was a great experience! I met many people there and they are all so awesome and unique!

Around 8, Jessica and I went back to our dorm. Our suite mates, Vicki and Yeojin were back! So we caught up on a lot of things. They are so cool. Vicki is from Argentina and Yeojin is from South Korea! Yeojin was also a sweetheart and got us all lotion. So totally adorable. Thank you, Yeojin!

And right now, I am in the plaza watching the Lego movie. I have had a great day so far! Ringling has been beyond my expectations! EVERYTHING IS AWESOMEEEEEE!!!

Hey guys! Here's the portfolio I submitted for Ringling CA 2014! Pretty happy with this one too.  I am again really thankful for what this whole application process has taught me.
